Each bread baker has a unique lid handle modeled on the plants in my back yard and the nearby woods. Trumpet vine, dogwood, black bamboo, ferns and mushrooms are just some of the motifs incorporated into the bakers.
The idea for bread bakers was suggested by a Zen friend who gave me the recipe for the most wonderful (and easy) artisan bread. It requires no kneading, and no special skills. It takes just ten minutes to assemble the ingredients. Then, leave on the kitchen counter for 6 to 8 hours to rise. Once the dough has doubled in size the bread is ready to bake for 45 minutes. Mix the dough at night, and bake the next morning! Prepare it in the morning, and have it for dinner that night! Each baker comes with the simple recipe (and rather long, excruciatingly detailed, instructions for those who are baking challenged), and a 100% cotton pastry cloth.
The bakers are made from a specially formulated red stoneware clay, fired to 2167 F. They will easily withstand oven temperatures of 450 F, but should always be placed in a cool oven to avoid temperature shock. They are unglazed and slightly porous which prevents the bread from sticking, and makes it possible to bake without the need for oil. The bread bakers require no seasoning, and are ready to use out of the box.
